The Hidden Crisis: Understanding the Faces of Homelessness in South Carolina

In South Carolina, homelessness is a growing concern, with recent statistics revealing an 11% increase in the 2023 Point-in-Time (PIT) count compared to 2022. As we delve into the demographics of those experiencing homelessness, it’s essential to recognize the faces behind the statistics—individuals and families whose lives have been profoundly affected by this crisis.

The Demographics of Homelessness

According to the 2023 PIT count, the majority of individuals experiencing homelessness in South Carolina are single adults, with 72% identified as such in the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS). Furthermore, 60% of the individuals counted were male, while 39% identified as female. Notably, there has been a slight increase (1%) in the number of women experiencing homelessness, highlighting the diverse needs of those affected.

The racial demographics present a stark picture as well. While 63% of individuals receiving homeless services through HMIS identified as Black or African American, the PIT count showed a 3% increase in White individuals experiencing homelessness—a significant shift in the demographic landscape.

The Impact on Families and Veterans
Among those affected, families with children represent a critical segment. The data reveals that 72% of individuals in shelters are single adults, yet the plight of families must not be overlooked. Additionally, the number of veterans experiencing homelessness is concerning, with 1,901 veterans identified in HMIS and 393 in the PIT count.

Personal Stories of Hope
One such story is that of Linda Stone, who faced the overwhelming challenge of homelessness.

“I met Pastor Kathy in the grocery store; she paid for my food. She didn’t stop there; she also invited me to her church service. They gave me a donation that Sunday. She came to take me to sign up for housing, and during several visits, she was right there with me. I was approved and received a place to stay for my family. I am grateful for her. This has been years, and I am still striving on my journey. I am no longer homeless. All my thanks goes to God first, and I am grateful for Dr. Pastor Katherine Moore of L.I.N.K. Empowerment Ministry.”

Linda’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of community support and the vital role that organizations like L.I.N.K. play in addressing homelessness.

The statistics may be alarming, but together, we can make a difference. L.I.N.K. Empowerment Ministry is dedicated to providing support, resources, and hope to those experiencing homelessness.
